Abstract Composition

For this week’s assignment we had the option of creating a logo for ITP or a logo for personal branding purposes. I decided to do my name and play with the placement of my initials. I like playing with geometric placement of the letters and experimented with negative space on the letter F. Suggestions included shifting the F over slightly to the left getting rid of the black line in the back, as well as moving over the D to match the black in the space to the left.

This design was has a more abstract approach. Compared to the first logo where the F and D are distinctive, the bottom illustration doesn’t serve the purposes of literally identifying the letters. The class saw it more as an icon or a “stamp.”

more iterations of the logos to come…
For this assignment we had to pick one of our favorite logo designers and one of their best logos. Paul Rand has been one of my favorites after I found out that he is responsible for designing the ABC television logo. He is also responsible for Apple’s iconic logo of the bitten apple. Strongly believing in the saying “less is more”, Rand exemplifies this motto in many of his logos, while still representing the company and their services.

Below are some of the logos Rand is responsible for.

Examples of bad signage exist all around the city. Some offensive, some of bad layout and some that leave you wondering what services the business is supplying. Below are a few examples for this week’s assignment of bad signage.
